Position Summary

The Staff Nurse – Catheterization Lab at NMC Specialty Hospital in Dubai provides direct and indirect age-specific care for patients undergoing procedures in the Cath Lab. This role involves nursing assessment, care planning, intervention, and evaluation, ensuring safe patient care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. The position adheres to UAE regulations and Joint Commission International (JCI) standards, including International Patient Safety Goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide age-specific, patient-centered care using the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
  • Perform problem-focused and age-specific patient assessments, including continual critical care assessments of physical and psychological needs.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and revise care plans, involving patients and significant others as appropriate.
  • Coordinate and prioritize critical care/clinical pathways based on individual patient needs, initiating appropriate transfer plans when necessary.
  • Recognize subtle cues to anticipate potential problems and escalate using the Early Warning System and American Heart Association emergency algorithms.
  • Document all relevant data in medical records according to hospital and departmental standards.
  • Ensure availability and maintenance of supplies and equipment needed for the Cath Lab and patient care.
  • Safely handle and administer Narcotic/Controlled and Semi-Controlled Drugs, following policies and procedures.
  • Operate specialized equipment, including Arthroscopy Tower System, Stotz Laparoscopic Tower, and Defibrillator for cardioversion, defibrillation, and transcutaneous pacing.
  • Perform unit-specific tasks, such as preparing and monitoring chest tube drainage systems, ensuring electrosurgery and laser safety, maintaining a sterile field, and managing specimens.
  • Implement protocols for infection prevention, including hand hygiene, skin antisepsis, surgical attire guidelines, and surgical smoke safety.
  • Provide care for pediatric patients, including assisting in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture, tracheostomy care, and managing infiltration/extravasation.
  • Ensure safety measures, such as preventing hypothermia, latex allergies, malignant hyperthermia, and retained instruments, sharps, or sponges.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, including data collection, incident reporting, and audits.
  • Complete mandatory education (e.g., fire, safety, infection control) and maintain unit competencies, including pain management and emergency device utilization.
  • Participate in staff meetings, unit committees/projects, and ongoing educational activities to maintain clinical and professional competency.
  • Act as a preceptor when applicable, providing competency-based orientation and objective documentation per hospital standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (minimum 3 years full-time course duration) or Degree in Nursing (minimum 2 years course duration) with registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, or Australia.
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent post-graduate experience in Operating Room or Catheterization Lab nursing.
  • Valid license/registration to practice in home country and/or country of last employment (where applicable).
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or equivalent, per scope of practice.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide care based on age, appropriateness, and developmental needs of patients.
  • Skills in assessing physical and psychological needs of patients and families, and coordinating and prioritizing care.
  • For UAE nationals: Exempt from experience and clinical training requirements (must submit birth certificate and mother’s family book).
  • For non-UAE national graduates from UAE universities: Must complete 6 months of clinical training post-graduation in an APS health facility (except for Registered and Assistant Nurse titles).
