Position Summary

The Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner at UHN demonstrates autonomy, with sole accountability and authority to independently diagnose, prescribe medications, and order diagnostic tests. This role involves utilizing advanced knowledge and decision-making skills to conduct comprehensive assessments, manage patient care, and implement strategies to promote health and prevent illness. The Nurse Practitioner will also provide coverage for UHN’s Virtual Emergency Department, delivering care through video visits for urgent, non-life-threatening issues via same-day online bookings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize advanced knowledge and decision-making skills to conduct comprehensive assessments, diagnose, and manage patient care.
  • Plan and implement strategies to promote health and prevent illness for individuals, families, and groups.
  • Deliver, coordinate, and participate in educational and professional development activities/programs.
  • Provide coverage for UHN’s Virtual Emergency Department, delivering care through video visits for urgent, non-life-threatening issues.
  • Demonstrate leadership and organizational skills in a patient-focused care model, including triage in an emergency department setting.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Master’s Degree Program in Nursing (or one semester from completion).
  • Registered Nurse (Extended Class) certification complete or pending.
  • Nurse Practitioner (NP) Adult or Primary Care certificate complete or pending.
  • Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Membership in the Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) or relevant organizations.
  • Canadian Nurses Association certification in Emergency Nursing preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience in Emergency Services preferred.
  • Experience in nursing research methodology.
  • Strong assessment skills and ability to predict changes in patient status.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills in a patient-focused care model.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform duties professionally, meet deadlines, and comply with confidentiality requirements.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN, and departmental policies.
  • Client-service oriented with the ability to work with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Experience in a triage role in an emergency department setting.
  • Ability to utilize information technology.
