📍 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive public health nursing services to infants, toddlers (0–5), and their families in homes, community spaces, and clinical settings.
  • Deliver services using a health equity, trauma-informed, and culturally safe framework.
  • Perform assessments, screenings, monitoring, and referral coordination for client health needs.
  • Respond to public health issues, including early childhood development, immunization, feeding, and community disease surveillance.
  • Collaborate with internal interdisciplinary teams and external community partners to promote informed, equitable access to services.
  • Support family-centered care through education, coaching, and coaching caregivers in child-rearing and wellness practices.
  • Utilize a continuum of public health strategies including advocacy, harm reduction, and strengths-based care.
  • Uphold professional standards in line with BCCNM, Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards, and CHNC Competencies.

📍 Qualifications

🎓 Education & Experience

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of applicable specialties:
    • 20-hour breastfeeding education course,
    • BCCDC Immunization Competency (preferred).
  • 2 years’ recent public health nursing experience, especially with prenatal or infant clients, or equivalent.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to a vehicle for work-related duties.

🧠 Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of public health principles, early childhood development, immunization, and community health systems.
  • Ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety, and provide trauma-informed, strengths-based, and inclusive care.
  • Skilled in health education, facilitation, conflict resolution, and community engagement.
  • Capable of analyzing issues and making evidence-informed decisions.
  • Familiarity with Baby Friendly Initiative and related best practices in infant nutrition.
  • Proficient in using electronic health systems, PC applications, and basic research methods.
  • Physically able to perform community-based care in diverse settings.

If there are not enough qualified candidates, on-the-job Public Health Nurse training may be offered. A cover letter and resume are required for applicants wishing to be considered for the training program.
