Position Summary

The Staff Nurse II – Emergency Services at Alta Bates Medical Center is responsible for the overall management of nursing care in the Emergency Department, applying the nursing process to ensure competent, compassionate, and cost-effective patient care from admission to discharge. This role involves providing holistic, individualized care, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and personal hygiene, and responding to medical and environmental emergencies. The Staff Nurse II collaborates with patients, families, physicians, and healthcare teams while adhering to hospital policies, industry standards, and applicable regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the overall nursing care process, ensuring competent, compassionate, and cost-effective care from admission to discharge.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for Emergency Department patients, ensuring holistic and individualized care.
• Ensure patient safety, comfort, personal hygiene, and protection, while performing disease prevention and restorative measures.
• Respond to medical and environmental emergencies with efficiency and professionalism.
• Develop and coordinate care plans that incorporate psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, economic, and lifestyle factors.
• Foster collaborative relationships with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams through timely and effective communication.
• Document all relevant patient data accurately in medical records per hospital standards.
• Use critical thinking to identify and solve problems, ensuring patient safety and privacy of protected health information (PHI).
• Adhere to hospital policies, safety precautions, and applicable laws/regulations to promote an optimal patient experience.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
• Registered Nurse (RN) license for California.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS) preferred upon hire or within 2 weeks of starting orientation.
• Minimum 1 year of current experience in emergency nursing or related specialty.
• Demonstrated knowledge of patient care techniques, medications, treatments, and general healthcare procedures.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to convey sensitive information to diverse audiences.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
• Ability to provide basic patient care, read/interpret professional journals or technical procedures, and document activities effectively.
• Demonstrate leadership abilities and deal with problems involving several variables in situations with limited standardization.
