Position Summary

The Nurse In Charge – Operating Theatre (OT) at Royal Women's Hospital is responsible for overseeing the delivery of safe, appropriate, and effective nursing care within the Operating Theatre complex. This leadership role involves coordinating clinical and administrative activities, ensuring high-quality patient care standards, and supervising perioperative and recovery room care. The Nurse In Charge collaborates with the Nursing Supervisor and other healthcare professionals to promote evidence-based practice, facilitate patient education, and maintain a safe and clean environment in accordance with infection control and waste management policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure and oversee the delivery of safe, appropriate, and effective care to all patients in the Operating Theatre.
  • Determine nursing interventions based on assessment data, prioritize needs, implement actions, and evaluate patient outcomes, revising care plans as needed.
  • Coordinate clinical and administrative activities of the OT when assigned to the charge nurse role.
  • Collaborate with the Nursing Supervisor on staffing for specific shifts.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate clinical programs, ensuring patient and family involvement in care decisions.
  • Facilitate patient education and maintain accurate clinical records.
  • Perform advanced or specialized nursing skills competently and independently.
  • Act as a clinical resource for OT staff and communicate effectively with other healthcare disciplines as a patient advocate.
  • Represent nursing at multidisciplinary rounds and participate in the development of standards, procedures, and protocols.
  • Facilitate evidence-based practice and promote change in nursing practice when required.
  • Take a proactive role in training, education, and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities under the guidance of Nursing Management/Nursing Education.
  • Promote a learning environment and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Supervise perioperative care and ensure adherence to the time-out policy within the OT complex.
  • Ensure optimum and continuous care in the recovery room and oversee the running of the Pre-Anesthesia Clinic.
  • Maintain department cleanliness in accordance with infection control and waste management policies.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to manage people and teams effectively.
  • Valid license to practice as a nurse with the relevant regulatory health authority (DoH, DHA) and all required qualifications and experience.
  • Ability to manage own professional revalidation.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and act as a patient advocate.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate clinical records and utilizing information technology.
